About Me:

My name is Anna Van Den Bogart. I enjoy helping people connect with their mental health. I have 3 children, a cat, and a gecko that all keep me busy. When I have a minute to myself a blast some Taylor Swift, while I color or play video games. I am working towards my master’s degree in psychology with an emphasize on clinical mental health counseling. I am motivated by proving people wrong. I struggled with my own mental health that I have worked on for many years. I have learned that it is okay to not be okay at times.

Professional Development

Philosophy of Counseling:

Counseling is designed to help people who are struggling with mental health. Counseling can help everyone who wants to make a change.

Mentorship:

Mentorship and Supervision: Compare the similarities and differences between mentorship and supervision.

Mentorship: A mentor will help you through a situation. They will explain what needs to be done and will work with you while you work through the situation.

Supervision: A supervisor will watch you do it and will only step in when you do something incorrectly.  They will explain what you need to do and oversee it getting done.

Mentorship Characteristics and Skills: Discuss the characteristics and skills important for selecting a professional mentor (e.g., experience/professional background, mentorship style, availability).

The mentor should have a good understanding of what needs to get done to better the company. A mentor should be available for a person to ask questions if necessary. A mentor should know how to get things done effectively. They should be willing to share their knowledge for the better of the company.

Professional Mentor Support Goals: Describe the goals (SMART) the CIT aims to achieve with professional mentor’s support.

A counselor in training should aim to be the best counselor they can be with supportive people around them. The counselor in training and their mentor should make goals manageable for anyone in the field to achieve. It only takes one person to change the confidence of another person. A good mentor can change the confidence of a struggling counselor in training.

Clinical Skills and Theory Development:

Clinical skills are useful when handling clients because a counselor needs to be able to help without getting in too involved. Clinical counselor will have to ensure they have the proper tools to help the clients. Theory development is designed to help the counselors figure out how to help the clients.

Professional Service, Leadership, & Advocacy:

Counselors have a service to help people with their mental health needs. Counselors use their knowledge and skills to help people with their mental health. Counselors use their leadership skills to help people who are struggling. Counselors are advocates for people who need help but are not sure of where to turn.

Research and Scholarly Activity:

A counselor will need to research proper techniques to help clients when they have a speed bump. The only place a counselor should get accurate and updated information is through scholarly sources. The scholarly sources have gone through an extensive process to make sure information is factual.

Counselor Identity Development

Psychological Fitness:

Counselors will need to be in a good psychological space to help other people. They cannot be going off the handle because their clients are not responding the way the counselor would like.

Flexibility:

Counselors should be open minded and have the courage to find solutions to challenges. Counselors will also have to work with people who may not have the same viewpoints as them.

Self- Awareness:

Counselors most know about their own struggles and how to work on them without reflecting on the client. Counselors need to understand that they are in a position to help people not the other way around.

Genuineness:

Counselors will need to show qualities of honesty. They will also have to continue to work and improve themselves so they can be the best version of themselves for the clients.

Empathy:

Counselors should have compassion, understanding, and clemency with clients. They should also make sure the client is comfortable with the counselor to talk about the tough stuff.

Amiability:

Counselor should display humility, compassion, and kindness towards others. Counselors should stay cordial with people who do not share the same viewpoints as them.

Patience:

Counselors need to understand that things may be difficult to talk about. They will also need to foster growth not only in the clients but in themselves.

Cultural Diversity:

Counselors have to understand that people from different cultures need help. Counselors should be professional and understanding with anyone that walks through the office doors.

Acceptance:

Counselors will need to know that they cannot help everyone that walks through their doors. They also should be aware that they cannot judge clients for having feelings.

Professional Identity:

Counselors should always be prompt, always come prepared, mandatory attendance, and professional attitude. Counselors can stay up to date on latest trends.
